Ginger, lemon and honey tonic

Ginger & Honey syrup recipe

My 4 year old woke up with a cough and a sore throat yesterday so I decided to make one of my favourite health tonics. I love to keep a bottle of this in my pantry. It’s a great all rounder tonic that combines the benefits of ginger, honey & lemon to help with sore throats, colds, coughs and tummy troubles.

Ingredients:

1-2 large pieces fresh ginger peeled & sliced

100g raw honey (can use manuka but not necessary)

1 large lemon sliced (best to use organic otherwise I recommend to peel)

Method:

Create alternate layers of sliced lemon and ginger in a small mason jar

Top with honey

Leave it for at least 12 hours before using

It has a long shelf life and I prefer to keep it refrigerated

Use:

Can either give a teaspoon directly or add to warm water for a tea

I usually give my girls a teaspoon at the first sign of a sore throat or a cough.

I get travel sickness so will make myself a thermos of warm tea to sip during a journey. I also make a tea for my girls to sip when they have upset tummies.

Note: it’s not recommended to give honey to children <1 year due to risk of botulism food poisoning
